Automatic transmission fluid does more than lubricate. It transfers power, cools the gearbox and controls how clutches engage. As it ages, shifting quality drops.
Typical service intervals
Many manufacturers recommend changing ATF every 60,000 to 100,000 km for normal use. Taxis, delivery vans and vehicles that tow or drive in heat should change it sooner, often around 40,000 km.
Warning signs
- Delayed or harsh gear changes
- Slipping between gears
- Dark fluid or a burnt smell
- Whining noises from the gearbox
Pick the right specification
Use the ATF specification in the owner’s manual, such as Dexron III, Mercon or a specific OEM approval. Extreme ATF Dex III covers gearboxes and power steering systems that call for Dexron III.
